Where the method comes from

Built on decisions made without a do-over.

Firn’s method comes out of air cavalry reconnaissance: Apaches flown out ahead of the ground force to find out what was actually there. Flying that mission means constantly balancing airspeed, fuel burn, munitions load, and shifting objectives against an environment that never stops changing, reading how those variables move together before committing to the next decision.

An Apache is built to fight. Sending one out to look instead is a deliberate trade, and the Army makes it on purpose: knowing the ground is worth spending your most capable asset on, before the main effort commits to anything. Understanding isn’t what you do on the way to the real work. It’s what makes the real work survivable.

The other half is what you do with that understanding beforehand. Nobody rises to the occasion under pressure; you fall to the level of your training. That sounds bleak until you notice what it hands you. The level is set in advance, by you, in conditions you choose. So the training runs as a progression: walk the plan on a sand table, rehearse in a low-fidelity simulator, then in full mission rehearsal, until the real thing isn’t the first time you’ve seen it. Firn brings the same progression to business decisions.

The modeling discipline behind it is catastrophic-event simulation: how complex operations hold up, or break down, under load. The method travels to any operation where a single decision carries outsized weight.
